Arena play Nottingham Grand Prix

Nottingham Arena put in a good performance in the Nottingham Volleyball Grand Prix this month.  With the squad coming together for the first time this season, there were a few nerves, which were soon settled as the first six took to the court.  Throughout the tournament, team Arena made good progress, increasingly gelling together with each match, culminating in two solid victories over Nottingham Rockets 1 and 2.

Team Arena brought debutants Marianna and Patrick in for the first match, which turned out to be a close battle with Vandals.  Everyone acquitted themselves well, with some great setting from Magda, and we did really well to hold things at 12-12 before Vandals egded ahead as time ran out.  Not bad for our first match of the season!

The second match saw Arena take on Ashfield Vipers, who went on to beat Vandals.  Arena brought some experience off the bench with Simon and Ania and improved on their first match with some great cover and scrambling in the back court.  Arena took a 3-point lead into the final minutes of the match, and only some very strong hitting from Ashfield's main player helped the VIpers scrape over the line, winning 16-15 as time ran out.

However, Arena kept their heads up and continued their progress as a team by beating Rockets 2 by 25-12 with time remaining!  Still improving, they followed that up with another victory over the stronger Rockets 1, running out winners by 22-14.

Arena's progress as a team throughout the afternoon was great to see.  Our new players, Patrick and Marianna made really good debuts. Ania, Chris, Mick and Simon put in solid performances, hitting with accuracy and occasionally with power (and more often than not, in court!).  It almost goes without saying (but not quite!) that Magda and Luke's consistent setting helped make them all look good.

Overall, a really good first outing for Team Arena, and we're already looking forward to the next round of matches on March 9th!
